WARETOWN, NJ (WABC/CNN) - It’s as ghoulish as any good Halloween display can be. A display outside of Kevin and Krysten Negrotto's in Waretown appears a little more lifelike.
But where did the idea come from? "Because the car was just sitting there, and it was going to be in the way. So instead of being in the way, we turned it into the main attraction,” Kevin Negrotto said last week.
When you first come upon the scene, it looks like a real crash. The vintage Toyota Supra rammed into a tree, pinning a victim. Blood is spattered on the hood. Another victim is thrown several feet away, and the yard is surrounded by crime scene tape.
"People kept telling us to add more, add more…we added more,” he said.
As you can well imagine, it immediately draws attention. Perhaps more attention than Kevin and Krysten expected. "This is a bus stop. All the kids love it. They think it's great,” Kevin said.
While driving by, many people voice their approval by honking.
But others, to Kevin's surprise, were a bit startled. "They think it's too real. Maybe it hits home too much for some people. And I get that, but it's Halloween. It's clearly fake,” Kevin said.
Then came the biggest trick-or-treat of all when the local police knocked on the door and not looking for candy. "They just said one of the neighbors didn't like it,” Kevin said. "So they showed up. They have to come out and let us know.”
The rest of Kevin and Krysten's yard is filled with more traditional Halloween decorations. The horror of it all is in this Halloween season, now one of the most popular, neighbors are trying to outdo each other with all kinds of displays. This one certainly raising the bar.
"Go big or go home,” Kevin said.
