(RNN) - Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-TX, introduced a resolution to declare March 31, Cesar Chavez’s birthday, as "National Border Control Day."

Chavez, a Mexican-American labor rights activist, led a number of successful boycotts. He helped get better wages and better conditions for workers in the Southwest and California.

He also founded the National Farm Workers Association to improve the wages and working conditions of farm workers. Chavez who initially believed ending illegal immigration was essential to improving the lives of American farm workers, also called for legalization of undocumented immigrants.

In 2016, the right-leaning group, Center for Immigration Studies called for a similar cause.

Gohmert serves as a Vice Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee and is a Vice Chair of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security.
