(CNN) - Two Republican senators claim former FBI Director James Comey drafted a statement of exoneration for Hillary Clinton before an investigation into her emails was completed.
Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-IA, who heads the Senate Judiciary Committee, gave the statement on Thursday along with fellow Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-SC. The two say their claim is based on interview transcripts with Comey's aides.
While head of the FBI, Comey looked into the former secretary of state's government emails on her private server. Grassley and Graham say Comey's draft exoneration was prepared in May 2016, before he interviewed top Clinton aides.
Comey publicly announced the FBI would not pursue charges against Clinton in July of last year. Grassley and Graham have sent a letter to current FBI chief Christopher Wray asking for more information on the Comey-Clinton email investigation.
