(RNN) - Comedian Kathy Griffin has apologized after taking part in a photo shoot with a severed head resembling President Donald Trump.

Early Tuesday night, Griffin admitted she made a mistake, "and crossed the line."

"I beg for your forgiveness. I made a mistake and I was wrong," she said in a tweet.

The image of Trump’s bloodied severed head has drawn criticism, and has caused a storm on the Internet.

Griffin said the blood was fake.

"I do not condone ANY violence by my fans or others to anyone, ever! I'm merely mocking the Mocker in Chief," she tweeted several hours before apologizing.

She is a two-time Emmy and Grammy award-winning comedian, and started a 50-city tour in January.

Beyond her comedy, Griffin is widely known for appearing with CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper on the network’s New Year’s Eve Special. She has co-hosed the event since 2007, her website says.
