(KKTV/CNN) – A picture of a sleeping baby appeared in a Craigslist ad in Colorado Springs, CO. The ad reads: "Healthy white baby for sale cheap.”
The ad went on to say, “Works fine but leaks out of his eyes occasionally." The price: $2,500.
"It could be a scam, but still, that's a baby. You don't do that to babies, you don't do that to anybody, period,” said neighbor Andrea Edwards. “My first reaction … I would have called the cops.”
The baby’s father, Chris Small, said the online listing was meant to be a joke.
"My baby was crying this morning. and I was joking with my girlfriend so I thought it'd be funny to post it on Craigslist,” Small said.
Small and his girlfriend say they have a sarcastic sense of humor.
"There was some people that took it lightheartedly as I meant it,” Small said. “Some people said, 'I needed a laugh today, that was funny.' Other people did not take it the same, they took it as a very bad thing.”
The Craigslist ad has since been deleted.
“I apologize for any public outcry. He's not for sale,” Small said, clutching his son. “He's definitely mine, I’m keeping him. I love him.”
Colorado Springs Police said they weren’t familiar with the ad. It wasn’t clear if there would be any charges associated with it.
