(CNN) - The American opioid crisis is only part of an overall drug abuse emergency. Opioids include prescription painkillers, heroin and fentanyl.
But cocaine-related overdose deaths among blacks are on par with overdose deaths caused by heroin and prescription opioids among whites. That's according to a study published on Monday in the medical journal Annals of Internal Medicine.
The researchers, from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Cancer Institute, found increasing rates of drug overdose deaths among black and Hispanic Americans.
One researcher said those increases have received less attention than recent opioid overdoses.
Cocaine-related deaths peaked between 2004 and 2007, declined between 2008 and 2011, and then increased again between 2012 and 2015 among blacks, whites and Hispanics.
