PHILADELPHIA - Police are looking for answers after a child-size coffin containing human organs was found on a city sidewalk.
39th District Police responded to a report of a child's coffin along the sidewalk.
Surveillance video from a nearby gas station shows police arriving to the scene shortly after 9 p.m.
Inside that tiny white casket "they found a plastic bag, appeared to be organs, human organs," Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
Investigators say there were no other remains inside the child's casket.
"What is unusual is, inside the coffin, other than the bag of organs, there was no body," Small said. "There was no head, arms, legs or torso, no skeleton, no skin, just organs."
The remains were taken to the medical examiner's office as police searched a cemetery across the street for any freshly dug graves.
The medical examiner confirmed that the organs were enbalmed human organs, and that no skeletal remains were found.
Police expected to use cadaver dogs to canvass the area, trying to search for the person and the reason behind this gruesome discovery.
"We're going to look into that. There have been cases where people take remains or human bodies for whatever unusual reasons," Small said.
