Car stolen as parents pack to bring newborn home from hospital

GRESHAM, OR (KOIN/CNN) - A third-time father was headed to take his baby girl home was when he discovered that someone stole his car.

He said it happened right in the hospital's parking lot.

Dalan Askew’s daughter, Penelope came into the world July 16.

Tuesday morning, Askew was getting everything loaded up into the family’s car right outside Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center for their trip home.

He went back into the hospital to grab a few things, feed his daughter and spent about 45 minutes inside.

“As I was going out the door I realized our car wasn’t in the spot I put it,” Askew said.

“I was looking around thinking maybe I parked it somewhere else, but I know I didn’t. I know I parked it right up front. My heart sunk and I just didn’t know what to do.”

The family’s only car was gone, and so were Penelope’s baby clothes.

They’re looking to get another car, but Askew said having a newborn means “you have other obligations than buying a new car.”

Askew was the only provider for his family, and now he and his wife are staying with his parents to get help with the baby and transportation.

A GoFundMe page for the couple is growing in support. They raised more than $1,000 in just one day.
