A car accident ripped a vehicle in half, sending the driver to the hospital, while the passenger walked away with no apparent injuries.

Lt. Stephanie Boucher with the Wilmington Police Department said the male driver was traveling northbound in a Black Acura on 17th St. in Wilmington, when he crossed over the median and hit a tree, splitting the car in half.

Pieces of the car were strewn across the northbound road on 17th St.

The 911 call came in at 5:53 p.m., said Boucher.

The Wilmington Police Department and Wilmington Fire Department responded to the call, according to New Hanover County Dispatch.

The age and condition of the male driver is not known, but he was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, according to Boucher.

Traffic investigators are still looking into causes of the car crash, and it’s not known yet whether drugs or alcohol played a role, said Boucher.

Northbound traffic was closed to drivers on a section of 17th St. near St. Andrews Dr. from about 6 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Traffic was flowing smoothly after crews left the scene.
