(CNN) - Canada became the second nation in the world to legalize recreational marijuana on Tuesday after the Canadian Senate overwhelmingly approved Bill C-45, or what’s known as the Cannabis Act. It will allow adults to possess and grow a limited amount of marijuana.
The bill would lift a 95-year ban on recreational marijuana and would allow the government to regulate production, possession, and sale of marijuana to Canadians. Regulated medical marijuana was legalized in 2001.
Weed still will be off-limits to those under 18, and users can only buy it from approved retailers across the country.
Legal marijuana is expected to spark a billion-dollar industry in the country - just like it did after nine US states and Washington, DC passed similar rules.
The bill is expected to go into effect in September.
Uruguay is the only other country to have full legalization of the drug.
