(CNN) - The wife of former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is the leading choice to become the next ambassador to the Vatican.
A nomination for Callista Gingrich could come this week, pending approval from the Office of Government Ethics.
The White House would like that to happen before President Donald Trump's meeting with Pope Francis in Rome later this month.
Newt Gingrich supported Trump's campaign for president and has served as an informal adviser.
He said after the inauguration that his wife was being considered for the ambassadorship.
Callista Gingrich is a devout Catholic and said in a 2011 interview she's "always been a very spiritual person."
