Cab driver put in headlock, robbed in video

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (WSVN/CNN) - Police are searching for a man caught on camera violently robbing an elderly cab driver in South Florida. That driver is alive and well, and is telling his story.

A dash cam records the cab driver getting robbed. “Sure it was scary. I'm 70 years old and this never happened like that before,” said Genrikh Blinster, the cab driver. The incident happened July 3, just before 6 p.m.

In the video, Blinster and the robber struggle before the suspect takes off with his cell phone. But luckily the bad guy dropped the $360 he had in his pocket and didn't do serious damage. "Thank God for that,” Blinster said.

Blinster moved to the U.S. from the Ukraine in the late 80s and has been working as a cab driver in South Florida for the past 10 years. Police released the video on Tuesday hoping someone will recognize the suspect and turn him in. Blinster says he hopes they find him, and justice is swift and severe.

But while the search continues, the grandfather of three with one more on the way says he enjoys driving,  and the crime won't stop him from doing what he loves. "I've been working all my life. My wife, she's still working. Will she finish working? Maybe not. Now, what are they going to do? Sit at home all day at the pool?" he asked.

As of Tuesday night, police have not identified the suspect. They're offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
