FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ (News 12 New Jersey/CNN) - A thief broke into a mineral museum Tuesday, stole $30,000 worth of gems and left behind a trail of blood.
Mark Boyer felt like his own home was robbed because the Franklin Mineral Museum of which he is president, is that much a part of his life.
A thief or thieves broke in through a second-floor window, came down a rope and made off with at least $30,000 worth of gems and other items.
"There were gemstones and there were some artifacts from our Mexican exhibit," Boyer said.
Shattered glass awaited the museum's curator yesterday morning, who discovered the valuables were taken.
Whoever did it left behind a trail of blood, which may prove crucial to investigators.
The museum exhibits items native to a mineral-rich region of New Jersey.
The museum was founded more than 50 years ago. It houses thousands of rocks, minerals and gems.
Boyer said they’re hoping police find the stolen items, and they plan to re-open for the public this weekend.
