Breaking the carb cravings

(CNN) - Holidays are known for their famous carbohydrates - stuffing, cookies, breads, cakes and pies.

But if you're more concerned about your waist instead of their taste, here are some tips to help you curb that craving for all those carbs.

Eating the right carbs such as beans, whole grains and fruit can keep us healthy and gives us energy.

But consuming highly processed carbs like white bread, sugary cereal, white rice, pastas and bagels produces rapid rises and drops in blood sugar, which is bad.

Experts say breaking carb cravings is not about getting rid of carbs entirely but rather scaling back.

Try cutting out highly processed starchy carbs for a week and replacing them with more high-quality carbs that are minimally processed.

Experts also suggest not skipping breakfast because research shows you may be more likely to have a blood sugar spike after eating a carb-rich lunch.

Instead of eating Pop Tarts and bagels, try steel-cut oats, rye bread, scrambled eggs, berries or fruit.
