INDIANAPOLIS (WISH/CNN) - A 14-year-old boy, who police say shot a 5-year-old in the head with a bb gun, will face juvenile criminal charges.
Bentley Cheshnut is being treated at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis.
The bb remains lodged in his brain. His doctor said Bentley could have bled to death if the bb moved one millimeter deeper.
According to the boy's mother, Bentley was sitting on a golf cart with a few other family members last Friday when the bb struck him.
"All you heard was a pop, sounded like a little firecracker. (I) kind of just looked around for a minute and then Bentley just started screaming," said Natasha McAdams, Bentley's mom.
Doctors expect Bentley to make a full recovery.
The teen detained in the shooting has been preliminarily charged with theft, criminal recklessness and aggravated battery.
His name has not been made public. He is expected in court for a hearing Friday.
