SENECA FALLS, NY (WROC/WSYR/CNN) – A 3-year-old in New York is unable to breathe on his own and has bleeding on the brain after his parents beat him with a belt, according to court documents.
Police say the boy’s stepfather, Donald Bovio, called 911 Saturday and said the boy had fallen down the stairs. He was rushed to the hospital.
But medical staff said the child’s injuries weren’t consistent with a fall, and an investigation began.
Police say the child had suffered significant trauma to the head and body, and he was unresponsive when they found him.
Court documents state the 3-year-old was beaten with a belt, leaving him in critical condition. He is on life support, unable to breathe on his own.
Both Donald Bovio and the boy’s mother, Alison Bovio, are charged with first-degree assault. They are being held on $50,000 cash bail.
The family is new to the area, but police say Donald Bovio has an extensive criminal history in Salem, MA, where they previously lived.
