LIBERTY COUNTY, TX (KFDM/KTRK/CNN) – A 14-year-old boy accidentally shot his twin brother while the two were trying to kill a snake Monday.
The teenagers, whose identities have not been confirmed, found a snake in a ditch and went home to get a pair of rifles, investigators say.
As one of the brothers prepared to shoot the snake, authorities say the victim knelt between the snake and his brother. The victim was shot just above the right ear.
The brother who was shot remains in critical condition at a Houston hospital.
Friends and classmates of the brothers held a vigil Tuesday in Nederland, TX, for their 14-year-old friend where they prayed for the teenager and his family.
"We're here, anything they need. This whole community is here for them. That’s what Nederland does best. They come together in times when people need them the most,” said Kerri Hays, one of the boys’ school counselors.
The brothers were excited to start high school, Hays says.
It’s unclear if anyone will face charges in connection to the shooting.
