Boat from 2011 tsunami washes up on Oregon coast

CANNON BEACH, OR (KOIN/CNN) – A 45-foot boat from the deadly 2011 tsunami in Japan has washed up on the Oregon coast. It is believe to have been at sea when the devastating tsunami hit more that six years ago.

There’s visible damage on the boat and it is covered in barnacles. Some Japanese writing on it was preserved.

One resident is in awe of the discovery.

“This is a quiet little place and all of a sudden at this really important point and time and this story in the lives of all those people are right here,” said resident Bonnie Neugebauer.

Officials examined the boat and determined it is no danger to the environment. It’s expected to stay put on the coast until a contractor removes it.
