A local dancer hoping to be picked as a backup dancer by Janet Jackson received some help she didn't expect.

Lala Diore has been dancing since she was 3 years old, and now she is dancing in the hearts of many across our area. This comes after a video of her dance moves is now a huge hit with the help of an unlikely source - a Birmingham police officer.

Diore, who was trying to film an audition video last week in downtown Birmingham, met officer Philip Jones

“He really turned the corner really fast and he said you know you can't do this. You can get hurt,” said Diore.

Despite the officers warning about safety, Diore was determined to get the shot for her audition video. She was on a mission.

"We really had a purpose behind it. We weren't just dancing to be dancing,” she said,

Diore was trying to catch the attention of the legendary singer Janet Jackson. The songstress called for dancers across the world to submit an online video of their best moves for a chance to be one of her dancers for many upcoming projects.

Diore told Jones that the deadline for submissions was quickly approaching. What happened next surprised her.

"He said, 'I'll stop traffic, I'll cut the lights on. Better yet , do you want the spot light on?' He said, 'Let me see what you got - dance."

At that moment, Diore performed her routine. Her brother and sister both recorded the video, which is now her online submission for Janet Jackson’s #DanceWithJanet competition.

Jones said he was impressed with Diore’s dance moves.

"I'm glad to see that she did have fancy moves, but she did do really good. I hope that Janet Jackson sees the video and maybe one day she can get both of us out there," Jones said.

"This has actually showed the world and the community that police officers are not just out here to harass people or that we’re being mean and uptight," Jones continued. "It shows we are human and we can have a little fun."

Diore added: “I didn't know this video would get the impact that it did. There are a lot of good police officers out here in the world."
