(CNN) - Some mothers have long suspected it and now science has confirmed it.

Babies may sleep better when they begin eating solid foods earlier.

According to a study published in the Jama Pediatrics Journal--

Introducing a child to solid baby foods at three months, resulted in small but significant improvements in night-time sleep.

The babies who ate solid foods slept about 17 minutes longer -- which can mean up to two extra hours of sleep per week.

In addition, the solid food eaters woke up less frequently throughout the night --

With researchers measuring about two fewer middle-of-the-night wakings.

Researchers were unable to determine exactly which foods were associated with better sleep.

Doctors still emphasize the importance of continued breastfeeding alongside the introduction of solid food.

Some pediatricians warn it's important that an early introduction of solids not result in a decrease of breastmilk, which provides valuable nutrition.
