(CNN) - President Donald Trump wants harsher punishments for drug dealers, including the death penalty, according to a report by Axios.
Axios is reporting the President is advocating for the death penalty for major drug dealers.
The site says he has been inspired by the policies of Singapore. Singapore has a mandatory death penalty for drug trafficking.
According to Axios, Trump believes a gentler approach to drug trafficking and use is ineffective. The report said Trump could also back legislation changing mandatory sentencing laws.
Axios said Trump would support people convicted of dealing as little as two grams of the synthetic opioid fentanyl serving a five-year mandatory jail sentence.
The law currently sets that sentence for those who deal 40 or more grams of the drug.
