PHILADELPHIA (KYW/CNN) - One of the largest tree and brush removal companies in the country pleaded guilty on Thursday to hiring and re-hiring hundreds of undocumented workers.
Asplundh Tree Expert, based in Willow Grove, PA, will pay $95 million to the federal government.
U.S. attorney special assistant Josh Davison says management at the company turned a blind eye for years while illegal immigrants did their work.
Davison says upper management did nothing to stop supervisors who hired illegal workers through word of mouth referrals.
“Having those employees leave the company, and then turn around days and weeks later to be re-hired by the company, simply under different names,” Davison said, according to a KYW report.
The $95 million figure is the largest settlement ever in an immigration case, the KYW report said.
