Arrow shot through dog's body while on owner's property

KELLOGG, IA (WHO-DT/CNN) - One-year-old Scooby is alert and walking around. His owner, Andrew Worrell, found him with an arrow shot all the way through his body.

“It went completely through the animal,” Worrell said. “The thing was, if it went this way or through the back, then that means it’s a hunting accident or a mistake.”

It appears the incident was no mistake. He said Scooby was just doing what dogs do naturally.

“My dog went to see whoever was next to my property, which is fairly close, and he does it all the time,” Worrell said.

Veterinarians say the arrow punctured Scooby’s lung, and given the level of trauma it was amazing the dog survived.

“When he came in, there was a lot of free gas in his chest and it was really remarkable that he actually walked in the door with the level of his injuries,” Dr. Roxanne Jacobson said.

Worrell wasn’t prepared to pay for those injuries.

“I am not a vengeful person at all,” he said. “I would like to know what happened. I would like some help with my vet bills because this is really pushing me back.”

Worrell hopes police can find the person responsible.

Despite his injuries, Scooby continues to put a smile on people’s faces.

Jasper County investigators say they are working the the Department of Natural Resources and that the person responsible could be charged with trespassing.

Worrell said the vet bill is at least $7,000.
