Police confirm two people are dead after a train "came into contact with persons trespassing on the tracks," according to a spokesperson for Amtrak.

The accident happened at 4:56 p.m. near the Chester Village apartment and business complex. No one on the train suffered injuries.

The train was traveling from Georgia to New York when it struck and killed two people.

Those who live in the area say while this is tragic, they see people walking on these tracks all of the time.

"A couple of police cars and a fire truck roll through there with the sirens on. They went down there and ran in the yard," said Brian Skora. The train tracks run near his back yard.

"I wasn't surprised when I saw all this going on," said Jeff Lesueur. "People use those tracks kind of a cut through here in Chester."

"A lot of people walk back and forth up to Whistle Stop, the gas station up there," said Skora. "It's not uncommon to see people walking back here."

Amtrak says the crash resulted in multiple delays for other train routes. One viewer tweeted, "I'm on the southbound train in Richmond. We're told it could be 4-5 hours until routes are resumed."

Amtrak says about 2,000 people are killed or injured in grade crossing and trespassing incidents nationwide each year.
