(CNN) - The skies may be friendly but plenty of people flying them are angry.

Government data released this week shows the number of complaints about airline service skyrocketed in April.

The Department of Transportation said it fielded more than 1,900 complaints from consumers.

That's up 69 percent from March and 70 percent from April of last year.

The vast majority of the gripes, more than 1,400 of them, were levied against airlines based in the United States.

The biggest issue? Flight problems.

In all, 753 complaints included gripes over cancellations, delays and missed connections.
