(CNN) - The Air Force is working with Lockheed Martin to develop high-energy laser weapon systems for its fighter jets.

The program has been dubbed "Lance," which stands for "Laser Advancements for Next-generation Compact Environment."

The laser-mounted jets are reminiscent of Star Wars, and the Air Force wants to one day use the weapons for self-defense. The weapons system will supposedly protect forces from missiles and drones.

Researchers will work on beam control and firing, as well as creating a jet-mounted pod system to power and cool the laser.

The laser jets' development reminds us of a certain quote from Jurassic Park:

The military is hoping to test the system by 2021.

Something tells us Goose and Maverick would have no problem riding these into the danger zone.
