CLIVE, IA (WOI-DT/CNN) – It’s a dirty job but 3-year-old Crew isn't afraid to do it.
"This and donuts has been the one constant he's been all about," said Liz Smith, Crew’s mother.
There's only one sound that could break him away from his fleet.
"Our entire week revolves around Thursday, that is how we've learned our days of the week - garbage truck day and that's what we live for," Smith said.
With the clock ticking, there's just enough time to dress the part. He sports his very own garbageman costume.
"I’m going to pick up garbage," Crew said as he headed to the curb - taking a brief pit stop to snag a straggler.
After all, it's his job.
As the green waste management truck rolls closer, the moment Crew has been waiting for arrives.
He looks forward to it almost as much as the person behind the wheel.
"I would say we've had three or four different regular drivers," Smith said, "and every one of them is friendlier than the last. They get out, they high five, they stop, they're never in a hurry - thumbs up."
"(Crew is} always out here with a smile on his face," Waste Management driver Nick Alt said.
And that face does a lot for anyone in the driver's seat.
"(Crew) always brightens up your day a little bit. The day can be kind of trash but kids always make it better," Alt explained.
The appreciation has always been a two-way street for crew and drivers who, against protocol, have been known to leave something special behind from time to time.
There's no telling how long crew's world will revolve around Thursdays and every day of the week leading up to it.
So, his mom and dad will enjoy this ride, no matter how long it lasts.
"Yeah, it will be a bummer if it kinds of burn out, which I'm sure it will at some point. It will, but we joke and say maybe he will look at a career in waste management someday and he'll never have to let go of the dream," Smith said.
