SAN FRANCISCO (CNN) - The city is mourning the death of its mayor, Edwin Lee.
His office said Lee died early Tuesday morning at a San Francisco hospital. The cause of his death was not released.
The 65-year-old had served as San Francisco's mayor since 2011. He was the first Asian American to lead the city, according to SFGate.
Before becoming mayor, he was an attorney noteworthy for fighting the city.
In 1978, as law student and intern at Asian Law Caucus, he represented the people of Ping Yuen public housing complex in their first rent strike against the city over conditions at the housing complex they considered unsafe and unsanitary, SFGate reported.
The president of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors, London Breed, will become the city's acting mayor.
