'A sick boy': Nashville suspect's grandmother expresses remorse to victims

NASHVILLE (WSMV/CNN) - The suspect accused in the fatal Waffle House shootings in Tennessee is now in police custody.

Now Travis Reinking's grandmother is expressing her condolences to the victims’ families.

Long before he was the subject of a frantic manhunt, Reinking’s grandmother Marilyn Hopper was worried.

Hopper said the man accused of murders isn't the grandson she's known.

“It's not him, he is a sick boy,” Hopper said.

Hopper joined Reinking's parents in 2016 in expressing their concern when he claimed Taylor Swift was harassing and stalking him.

They advised he owned and had access to many firearms at his residence.

After Sunday's massacre at the restaurant, Hopper said she wants Nashville to know she is sorry for what occurred.

“My heart goes out to those people who have loved ones they've lost,” she said. “I've lost two children myself and I know what that feels like. My heart really does go out to them. But you know, we have a side too.”

A side that grows ever complicated.

Reinking's father is being heavily criticized online.

He took three rifles and a handgun away from his son when Reinking was having "problems" last June, according to police reports.

Reinking was caught trying to enter the White House the very next month. His four weapons were ultimately taken from him by state investigators.

Police believe Reinking's father, at some point, gave the weapons back.

Authorities said it is possible the father violated some laws if he did return the weapons to his son.

“It is possible,” said Marcus Watson of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. “If you transfer weapons to a person knowingly who is prohibited, it could potentially be a violation of federal law.”

With their relative now charged in the nation's latest deadly shooting, all hopper can do is express her remorse.

“I'm just so sorry for those people and their loss and my heart goes out to them," Hopper said.

Among the weapons taken from Reinking in Illinois was a Kimber handgun, the same model of handgun was found in Reinking's backpack when he was arrested.
