A new report from the U.S. Department of Health shows a dramatic decrease in the birthrate of teens in the United States. The report details the birthrate among American women in 2013.
This decline is mainly a result of the long slide of births in teenagers between the ages of 15 and 17.
Overall, the number of babies born to teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 was 26.6 births per 1,000 women, a ten percent decrease from 2012. The report found that this is a historic low for the nation. The number of teen births in 2013 was 38 percent fewer than 2007, which had the most recent high.
Since 1991, the birthrate among teenagers has declined 68 percent for those aged 15 to 17, and it cut in half for those aged 18 and 19. Although the number of births among teens has been declining steadily since the early 1990s, the report shows that a strong decline began in 2007.
According to the study, the total numbers of births among women were only about five thousand more than those in 2012.
