KAZAN, Russia - Rising junior Katrina Young placed sixth in the women’s 10-meter platform at the World University Games which are held Aquatics Palace in Kazan, Russia. Behind three rounds of five dives, Young finished her first international competition as an adult by climbing to sixth with a score of 289.30.
In prelims, Young put up a mark of 253.30 and finished in 11th place in order to advance to semifinals.
For her semifinal round, Young increased her degree of difficulty on her first dive and improved her total to 268.25. Young closed out the round in 10th place, qualifying for finals.
Immediately following semifinals, Young stuck with her tougher list for the final round.
Sitting in 10th place after three dives, Young made her move with her armstand back double somersault with 1 1/2 twists, grabbing 65.6 points on the dive.
Setting herself up for her 15th and final dive in seventh place, Young performed her best dive of the competition by tallying 70.40 points on a back 2 1/2 somersault with 1 1/2 twists.
Young saved her best round for last and turned in a score of 289.20 as the Shoreline, Wash. native turned took sixth place.
“I was pleased with Katrina’s performance,” head FSU and Team USA diving coach Patrick Jeffrey said. “She had three lists to perform today and that’s a very long day in diving. Katrina got better as the day went on and I was very proud of her.”
Russia’s Yulia Koltunova won the gold with 347.35 points, while China’s Xia Yuhua (335.75) and Chen Ni (312.45) took silver and bronze. The other American in the field, Laura Ryan (Georgia) finished in fifth just ahead of Young with a tally of 292.00.
