TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) - There are just a few more weeks left in the season for high school football teams in the state of Florida. With the state's new point system, wins are at an all time premium, especially if you're just outside the bubble of making the postseason.
Maclay and FAMU DRS are on the bubble in Class 2A Region 1, and they face each other Friday night in what could be the difference maker in making the playoffs.
"Both teams want it, it's going to come down to who can execute," said Maclay head coach Lance Ramer. "I think the effort will be there. If they execution is there, then the outcome. Hopefully that'll be on our side.
Baby Rattler head coach Cedric Jones expects the same.
"We tell them everyday, every game means something," he said. "The way the playoff format has been adjusted, that means, from game one, that means something all the way to game ten or eleven."
They're preparing for the Marauders run and pass game, as Maclay does both well. Confidence is high with FAMU DRS, as they're coming off a close loss to traditional power North Florida Christian. The Marauders look to move on from a loss to Holy Trinity, something Ramer says they haven't thought of much since losing that game last week.
These two teams, evenly matched, and Ramer and Jones agree this one could come down to mistakes, and who makes less of them.
"We're neck and neck with the team we're playing, and I said to these kids, all you want is an opportunity," said Ramer. "You want to line up with an opportunity to win and that's all we can ask for. It's here right in front of us."
"We can't give up big plays. If we do, we have to regroup and make sure we don't give up touchdowns," added Jones. "That's the same old mantra you get from every coach. Turnovers is big for us. We want to make sure we limit our turnovers."
Friday's game kicks off at 7:00 at Maclay.
