Valdosta, GA (WTXL) -- New Valdosta head Coach Alan Rodemaker is excited to start his first season as the head coach. He was the Wildcats' defensive coordinator last season. Rodemaker wants to put his own spin on the offense and run the football more including running from the quarterback position. Rodemaker has picked up six new assistant coaches to keep his team on its toes.
"I have been busy," Rodemaker said. "I just have stacked head coach above defensive coordinator. I have been just kind of doing both."
Rodemaker believes training camp should difficult so he can see which players can step up to the challenge of surviving the preseason. The Wildcats have five starters back on offense and all of their defense returning. Rodemaker expects all the quarterbacks vying to replace Seth Shuman to be able to run the football.
"Our quarterbacks are Josh Belton and Hunter Holt." Rodemaker said. "Those guys are going to have to run the football alot too. We need three quarterbacks. If we are going to have three guys run the football we need to have three guys ready to go."
Rodemaker said both Belton and Holton are doing a good job. The third quarterback he is referencing is JV quarterback Jude Ard. He would not commit to a starter before this season. However, Rodemaker says Hunter Holt was the starter after the finishing spring football workouts. Valdosta begins the season against its crosstown rival Lowndes so the sense of urgency increases even more to start off well.
"If we play well I'll be for it, if we don't I'll be against it." Rodemaker said. "But it certainly helps prepare our kids."
