TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Maclay football program welcomed in new head coach Lance Ramer over the summer, who replaced Kyler Hall after the longtime Marauder coach left for his alma mater.

With Ramer new to Maclay, the Marauders are also heading in a new direction. They'll be playing independently this fall, meaning they won't be eligible to compete for a State Championship through the Florida High School Athletic Association.

Ramer said the decision gives his team an opportunity to compete. The Marauders were 2-8 last season, and with low numbers this year, Ramer said step one is shifting the culture surrounding the football program.

"It's about getting kids around who feel good about what they're doing and who come everyday and enjoy it," he said. "It's all about coming everyday and knowing that and again, knowing that you have an opportunity to compete, you're competing with people who love what they do and have a passion. If we want to accomplish anything, it comes with energy and enthusiasm, and that's where we're starting."

Maclay opens preseason play against Munroe at home on August 19th. Their first regular season game is at home against Thomasville Brookwood on August 23rd.
