MAYO, Fla. (WTXL) - The last time the Lafayette football team had a losing season, the kids on the team weren't even born. The date was 1995, and last season, the Hornets went 3-7 to snap the two decade .500 mark.
Lafayette also missed out on the playoffs for the first time in a decade, and head coach Joey Pearson admits he had to step back and change some things to make sure his group got back to their winning ways.
"Physically, they're totally different guys. We had some guys last year, we had a corner, he started every game, and he didn't turn 15 until December," said Pearson. "That's a little kid playing the Madison County Cowboys."
That youth, the Hornets boasted 22 sophomores a year ago, is now an experienced group of football players.
"I feel like you can see us walking around physically we're better," added Pearson. "It's going to be key, coming off a season like we had last year to get off to a good start, win some games early, maybe gain some confidence and build on that end as we get into our conference schedule."
Mayo takes on Taylor County on August 19th for their Fall Classic. They open up the regular season at Franklin County on the 26th.
