TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The FAMU DRS football team was winless last season, and longtime head coach Ira Reynolds was let go as a result. There's been a lot of changes for the Baby Rattlers this off season, but they're looking to turn things around this fall.
They didn't have to look very far to find a replacement, as FAMU High alum Rontarius Robinson came back to his stomping grounds to take over the head coaching spot.
He knows this is a rebuilding year, as as far as numbers go? They have just five starters returning, and just over twenty guys on the roster.
"The last time we won State, we won it with 22 players," said Robinson, adding having a roster in the low 20's is typical at Famu High. "It's really Ironman football. You really get the chance to shine at FAMU DRS, because all eyes are on you."
Robinson himself had a stellar career at Howard after leading FAMU DRS, and also played in the CFL, and said there's never been a shortage of talent at his alma mater.
"Our history proves that we send players D1, we send players to the pros," he said. "At the same time, we have to focus on what we do and be prepared to play both ways. Conditioning is a big part of our motto this year. You have to be conditioned."
FAMU DRS opens the regular season August 26th against Vernon.
