QUINCY, Fla. (WTXL) - More than 75 kids woke up early in Quincy to come to Carter Parramore Academy for the 6th annual Win-Win Football and Cheerleading Camp. The camp was from 9am until 1pm with former FSU defensive back Leroy Smith. Kids went over some basic football drills, cheerleading fundamentals, and learned how to live a healthy and athletic lifestyle.
"Six years is amazing," Leroy Smith said. "Trying to impact the community the best way I can. It is a blessing."
Smith says he learns every year to add on something new to his camp. Former Seminole players such as Ernie Sims, Rodney Gallon, and De'Cody Fagg were there to teach the kids as well. Current FSU players such as Travis Rudolph and BoBo Wilson also were counselors. Smith wanted all his campers to understand, expect and appreciate hard work.
"Work ethic, in order to succeed you have to have a positive work ethic. " Smith said. "My father always told me if a man doesn't work, a man doesn't eat. I just want to show all these kids today that you have to have a positive work ethic. You are not entitled to anything."
His former teammates aren't surprised Smith wants to change his community. Suwanee Coach Kyler Hall played three years with Smith at Florida State.
"His personality is contagious." Hall said. "Leroy never meets a stranger. When you talk to Leroy it's like he's known you your whole life. He always makes you feel good about yourself and he's always uplifting and encouraging. For him to be able to impact the youth like he does in Quincy and surrounding counties it makes a huge impact."
