CRAWFORDVILLE, Fl. (WTXL) - For athletes, everything can go back to competition.
From stats on the diamond to grades in the classroom, for Wakulla seniors Jared Weber and Thomas Anderson, they're one in the same.
"I think we like to do the best that we can do," said Weber of a little academic competition between him and Anderson. "It's something we can share, and it is fun."
"It is a friendly competition," laughed Anderson, "but it definitely pushes us and motivates us."
Weber is ranked ninth in the class of 2018 with a 4.34 GPA, while Anderson sports a 4.29 GPA and is ranked 13th in their class of 339 students.
"Education first, and they really pay attention to detail in their academics and it bleeds over onto the field," said head baseball coach Keith Anderson. "It really carries over to the rest of our team."
The numbers on the field match, as Weber leads the team in RBI, doubles, and triples while Anderson has over a .400 batting average with two triples on the season.
"Neither one of them say a whole lot," said coach Anderson. "They just kind of lead by example. They get their work done. They're competitive, they enjoy being with each other and they enjoy playing the game hard. I couldn't ask for better role models."
"I kind of like to be a role model," added Weber. "I kind of set the standards. I just want to make sure these young kids are following what we do here."
What Wakulla does a lot of? Winning, and both Jared and Thomas are looking to make sure they're on the winning end to close out their careers.
"We definitely want to win, but we want to have fun and enjoy our last season, our last go round together," said Anderson.
"There's a lot of goals and I think our guys are bought in," added Weber. "I want us to do good. We want to make it to the State Championship and hopefully we can if we stay focused."
Staying focused sounds like something both guys are pretty good at.
