VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - There is just one high school team remaining in the hunt for a State Championship. This past Friday night, the Valdosta Wildcats took care of an undefeated Dalton squad. Now, they're gearing up for a trip to Atlanta and looking to do something they haven't done in 18 years.
For the first time since 2003, the Valdosta Wildcats will compete for a State Championship. It's a storied program with 912 wins, the most of any high school in the country, and 23 State Championship.s
The Cats are in a bit of a drought through. A win over Tucker would mean the first title since 1998.
"I'm really not comparing these guys to any other team that's been here, 100 years ago or next year," said head coach Alan Rodemaker. "It's this year's team and I want them to be focused on the job at hand, and to get out there and get after it, you know the tradition here is well known and well spoken, the kids here it all the time, um I really don't want to have to put any more pressure on their back than just winning a football game."
Friday night's game against Tucker kicks off at 8:00 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
