Valdosta State wins seventh Gulf South Conference Men's All-Sports Trophy

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Valdosta State used a strong spring showing to claim its seventh Gulf South Conference Men's All-Sports Trophy as it tied West Florida with 29.5 total points during the 2012-13 season, as announced by the league office Tuesday.

The tie between Valdosta State and West Florida marked the first such occurance in the 42-year history of the honor.

Valdosta State used strong showings in both baseball and basketball to win the 2012-13 All-Sports Trophy. Trailing West Florida by 4.5 points entering the 2013 GSC Baseball Tournament, the final championship event of the year for the conference, the Blazers claimed the maximum eight points by winning the tournament title while West Florida finished fifth to earn just 3.5 points. Meanwhile, the VSU basketball team finished second on the year to earn seven points.

VSU also gained three points for a fifth-place showing in cross country, four for football, three for golf and 4.5 for tennis to round out its points.

West Florida also claimed the All-Sports Trophy for women's athletics as it won five of the seven GSC championships on the year to tally 41.5 points. Valdosta State was fourth on the women's side with 27.0 points.
