VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - The Valdosta State football team fell in the second round of this year's Division II Championships, and then in January, head coach David Dean left after nine seasons at the helm of the Blazer program.

On Monday, the Kerwin Bell era began at Valdosta State, as the former University of Florida quarterback and Jacksonville University head coach kicked off spring practice with the Blazers.

Bell spent nearly a decade at JU before signing on at Valdosta State in January. He said this week, he will look to earn the respect of the team, and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, but on Monday, he was just happy to be back on the field.

"It's always exciting, especially a new group, being in a new program, first day of ball, getting them out here," he said before practice. "I've been really pleased with the way they've worked this off season, so it'll be fun to get them out here and play some real football! We'll get them out here and run them through some of our schemes. I'll tell you, they've worked extremely hard like I said, so this will be fun to get them out here and coach them up."

Valdosta State's spring game is Saturday, April 23rd at 4:00.
