KINGSVILLE, Texas – Valdosta State scored 14 fourth quarter points to defeat Texas A&M-Kingsville 35-27 in non-conference football action at Javelina Stadium Saturday evening.
With the win, VSU ends its 2013 season with a record of 6-4 while Texas A&M-Kingsville ends its season at 2-8.
The Javelinas raced out to a 17-0 lead as they scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter followed by a field goal in the second. TAMK got the scoring started on its first drive as it marched 75 yards on 14 plays. Caleb Bedford put Texas A&M-Kingsville in front on a third-and-goal pass when he hooked up with Musa Mahmud for a four-yard pass.
A Kaleb Nobles fumble on the Blazer end of the field set up TAMK's second touchdown as Ricky Marshall recovered the fumble on the VSU 12. Three plays later Beford found Robert Armstrong from 11 yards out to push the TAMK lead to 14-0 with 1:34 to play in the first quarter.
Matt Stoll added a 51-yard field goal midway through the second quarter before Valdosta State put together a drive to get on the board. Nobles completed all three of his passes on the VSU scoring drive for 27 yards and added a 13-yard scoring run to cap off the drive that pulled VSU to within 17-7 1:46 before the half.
Jeremy Grable picked off a Bedford pass and returned it 11 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage on the ensuing drive to cut VSU's deficit to three points at the half.
An interception on the opening drive of the second half led to a 35-yard field goal for Stoll to push Texas A&M-Kingsville's lead back to six points, but Valdosta State responded on the ensuing drive to grab its first lead of the game. Austin Scott returned the kickoff after the field goal 35 yards to the VSU 41 and picked up 15 yards on three runs to help move the ball. Cedric O'Neal finished off the drive with a pair of the runs, the last coming from a yard out for a touchdown that gave VSU a 21-20 advantage with 10:39 to play in the third quarter.
The Javelinas regained the lead on their next drive as Bedford found Armstrong for a 49-yard touchdown pass, but VSU recovered a fumble on the TAMK end of the field on the next Texas A&M-Kingsville drive to once again regain the lead. Following the fumble recovery by Cooper Lemonds, Scott gained four yards on a run before Nobles hit Tyre Waiters for a 21-yard touchdown that gave the Blazers a 28-27 lead with 14:02 to play in the game.
After forcing Texas A&M-Kingsville to punt from its own one yard line on the ensuing possession, Valdosta State pushed its lead to 35-27 as Regginald Lewis scored on a three-yard run.
Noble completed 25-of-42 passes for 228 yards while gained 167 yards on 30 carries. Chris Anderson led the receiving corps with eight catches for 77 yards as Valdosta State tallied 400 yards of total offense.
