HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) – Shakayla Thomas scored 26 points and No. 13 Florida State beat James Madison 79-63 on Sunday.
Thomas scored 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting in the third quarter when the Seminoles went from a one-point halftime deficit to a 10-point lead.
Lexie Barrier and Kamiah Smalls hit 3-pointers for the Dukes to open the fourth but Thomas responded with a pair of baskets for an eight-point lead. After the teams exchanged baskets, another Barrier 3-pointer with 5:12 to go cut the lead to five but the Dukes didn’t score again.
Thomas reached 20 points for the fifth time this season. She was 13-of-22 shooting. Nausia Woolfolk and AJ Alix scored 12 points each and Imani Wright added 11.
The Seminoles are 8-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 season and the third time in program history.
Kelly Koshuta scored 19 points and Smalls 16 for James Madison (2-5).
POST-GAME NOTES:
• Senior forward Shakayla Thomas recorded her fourth straight game with 10+ field goals made. Over her last four games she has totaled 28 points vs. Sacred Heart, 29 vs. Samford, 31 at Iowa and 26 at James Madison.
• Sophomore guard Nausia Woolfolk had one of her best games of the season, scoring 12 points with seven rebounds and three assists in a career-high 30 minutes.
• Redshirt senior point guard AJ Alix added 12 points and continued her season-long streak of positive assist/turnover ratios – she had nine assists to three turnovers.
• FSU ended the final 4:51 on an 11-0 run. JMU’s last made field goal was a 3-pointer to cut its deficit to 68-63 with 5:12 left.
• FSU held JMU to 32.3 percent (21-of-65) from the floor, the sixth opponent that has been held to 33 percent or less.
• Florida State out-scored JMU 30-19 in the third quarter. For the season, the Seminoles are out-scoring opponents 198-103 (+95) in the third quarter.
• FSU’s 30 points in the third quarter against the Dukes is its sixth 30+ quarter this season. A key stretch of the quarter was when the Seminoles went 8-of-8.
• FSU improves to 2-0 all-time against JMU after defeating it 84-64 last season in Tallahassee.
• FSU now has an eight-game win streak against non-conference opponents on the road.
• Sunday’s game was only FSU’s fourth against a Colonial Athletic Association opponent.
• Sunday’s matchup included 43 total personal fouls (22-JMU; 21-FSU), the most in an FSU game this season.
