VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - Last week, the annual "War of the Border" All-Star Series kicked off in Moultrie, week one of a three week high school football rivalry where a team from Florida faces off with a team from Georgia. On the line? Bragging rights, and so far, Georgia has the leg up.
Team Georgia beat Team Florida last week 24-23 in a match-up of South Georgia vs. the Big Bend. This Friday night, it's Valdosta vs. North Central Florida.
Former Valdosta High head coach Rance Gillespie was set to coach Team Georgia this week, but accepted a co-offensive coordinator position at Georgia Southern earlier this month. Filling in? Valdosta High defensive coordinator Alan Rodemaker.
The decision on the vacant Wildcat spot has not been made yet, but Rodemaker wants it, and he's not shy to say why.
"Everyday I come to work and I feel privileged to be here," he said Tuesday. "It's just my players and the community backing me up has given me a great feeling in being here."
Week two's War of the Border match-up will take place Friday at 6:30 in Valdosta at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
