TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (June 21, 2013) – Two standouts from Tallahassee Community College’s women’s basketball team have solidified their plans for the next two seasons.
Guards Sarah Williams, who hails from Roanoke, Va., and Brooklyn, N.Y., native Alexis Grant announced earlier this week they will attend Texas Southern University and Bluefield College, respectively, beginning this fall.
Williams was a two-time all-Panhandle Conference selection, earning second-team honors as a freshman and honorable mention recognition in 2013 after battling through an injury-plagued sophomore season.
Williams opened the 2012-13 campaign as the Lady Eagles’ starting point guard but sprained her ankle less than three minutes into the season opener against Albany (Ga.) Technical College on November 2. After sitting out the next nine games, she returned on December 7 against St. Petersburg College and ended up averaging 5.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and a team-best 1.9 assists in 17 games.
As a freshman, Williams averaged 13.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.8 steals in 24 games, and in 41 career games she averaged 10.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals.
At Texas Southern, she’ll be reunited with former Tallahassee assistant T.J. Royals, who coached Williams as a freshman before taking a similar position at Panhandle Conference rival Gulf Coast State College last season. He recently accepted a spot on incoming head coach Johnetta Hayes-Perry’s staff at Texas Southern.
Texas Southern, located in Houston, is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Grant, meanwhile, has been a part of the Lady Eagles’ program for three seasons.
As a freshman in 2010-11, she was on her way to all-Panhandle Conference honors before a knee injury ended her season after just 15 games. Prior to the injury, she was averaging 10.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.8 steals.
After sitting out the 2011-12 campaign, she returned to the court last season and averaged 9.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and a team-high 2.9 steals in 26 games. Those numbers helped her land a spot on the all-Panhandle Conference second-team.
In 41 career games with Tallahassee, Grant averaged 9.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals.
Bluefield College, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), competes in the Mid-South Conference and is located in Bluefield, Va.
