TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) - Tallahassee-Leon Babe Ruth baseball has always been strong. Last year, the 13U group went to the World Series finishing in second place.
Back in 2009, two teams captured World Series titles, but that's the last time a local team has celebrated the Championship of all Championships. The road to a World Series crown starts this weekend in Tallahassee, when the ten year olds kick everything off with the Cal Ripken State Tournament.
Next weekend, the 13's, 14's, and 15's take the field. Overall, 27 teams from across the state of Florida will play ball in Leon County over the next two weeks, something that's expected to bring somewhere around four million dollars to the local economy.
Even more exciting? These kids get a chance to play at home.
"It gives an opportunity for grandparents, friends and family to come out and see the game," said Kip West, who's on the board with Tallahassee-Leon Babe Ruth baseball. "It's also a great opportunity for some of our younger guys to get a chance to play on high school baseball fields, college baseball fields, and it's a chance for the younger guys to play in front of their immediate family."
The 10U group kicks off tournament play on Friday.
