OCALA, Fla. (March 10, 2017) – NJCAA No. 3/Region 8 No. 1 Gulf Coast State College eliminated No. 9/No. 3 Tallahassee Community College from the FCSAA State/NJCAA District Tournament on Friday, winning by the score of 99-69.

Gulf Coast State moves on to Saturday’s championship game where it will have the opportunity to successfully defend its crown against Panhandle Conference rival Chipola College.

Tallahassee’s season, for the moment, has come to an end at 23-7, though the Eagles are in contention for one of eight at-large berths to the NJCAA Tournament. Tallahassee will find out on Sunday if it will advance to the 24-team tournament in Lubbock, Texas.

Friday’s game was never in doubt.

Gulf Coast State led wire-to-wire and blitzed the Eagles for 29 first-quarter points en route to a 17-pont lead (29-12).

For the second straight game against the Commodores, Tallahassee’s Lawriell Wilson was near-unstoppable. The sophomore guard scored 25 first-half points, including all 19 of the Eagles’ points in the second quarter, singlehandedly outscoring Gulf Coast State, but Tallahassee managed to only trim two points off the deficit and trailed 46-31 at the half.

Tallahassee didn’t get closer than 15 points in the second half, thanks to some red-hot shooting from the Commodores. Gulf Coast State hit 21-of-32 shots from the field in the second half – a 65.6 percent clip – and finished 38-of-69 (55.1 percent) for the game.

Wilson finished with 29 points. Jas Hill added 17 and Japonica James, 14.

Taylor Emery scored 35 points to lead Gulf Coast State.
