TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tallahassee Community College’s baseball team picked up its 25th win of the season on Wednesday, defeating Andrew (Ga.) College, 7-4, at Eagle Field. The Eagles are 25-6 heading into Thursday’s non-conference finale in Cuthbert, Ga. – the back end of a home-and-home set with Andrew.
Tallahassee managed just seven hits on Wednesday, but took advantage of eight walks and three hit batsmen by Andrew pitchers. The game was scoreless until the Eagles got on the board with two outs in the third.
Kyle Cavanaugh singled to right, scoring Mac Wilson from second for the first run of the game. Three straight walks produced two more runs. The first to Myron Mebane loaded the bases – the next two, to Kyle Taddeo and Deyvid Silva forced home runs and gave Tallahassee a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth, a hit batter, a walk and a bunt single loaded the bases with nobody out. After Zach Featherstone was retired on a shallow fly ball to right , Cavanaugh hit a sac-fly to deep center, scoring Bret Maxwell. Mebane followed with a two-out single to plate Ethan Crout and extend the Eagles’ lead to 5-0.
Aided by a pair of defensive miscues, Andrew got back in the game in the fifth, scoring three runs, but Tallahassee got two of those back in the bottom half on Wilson’s double that scored Silva and Manny Chavarria.
Staked to a 7-3 lead, Tallahassee starter Rion Murrah pitched into the seventh before handing things over to the bullpen with one out. Thomas Nicoll recorded the final two outs in the seventh and Brooks Buckler pitched the eighth and ninth.
Murrah (3-2) picked up the win, scattering seven hits over 6.1 innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) and one walk while striking out six. Wilson (3-for-5) had three of the Eagles’ seven hits and drove in two runs. Cavanaugh also had two RBIs. Thursday’s game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
