AMES, Iowa (WTXL) - The AVCA Showcase continued to be a great success for No. 13 Florida State, as the Noles swept Iowa State 3-0 Sunday afternoon.
"Iowa State has been really strong the last five years," FSU head coach Chris Poole said. "I am very proud of our girls for going in there and getting a sweep."
Junior outside hitter Nicole Walch led the Seminoles from the floor with 18 kills and a .469 attack percentage.
"We came out strong," Walch said. "We wanted to build off the big win (against No. 7 Nebraska) on Friday, and I thought we did that today. My teammates kept giving me opportunities and as a team we took care of business."
"Nicole is our most experienced returning hitter," Poole said. "She knows that she needs to be a leader and she is taking that responsibility to heart."
The Florida State defense stepped up with 14 team blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Sarah Burrington earned eight block assists in the match.
"We really focused on the fundamentals today," Burrington said. "We had great hands and blocked smart and it paid off for us."
After earning two wins in the AVCA Showcase, Florida State will hold their home opener Thursday, September 4 in Tully Gym against No. 10 Florida. Match time is set for 6:00 p.m., and the event will be televised on ESPN3.
"This was an exceptional weekend," Poole said. "We played well, and now we have a chance to play Florida on our home floor. It's going to be great for us to have that opportunity to show our fans the 2014 edition by going against a very high-level opponent."
