CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Earning a sweep of a conference opponent for the fourth time this season, No. 8 Florida State (34-4, 13-1 ACC) came from behind to defeat Boston College (21-18, 4-8 ACC) by a score of 9-6 on Sunday afternoon at Shea Field.
“Great fight and focus out of everyone to not get down when we gave up those early runs,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “Jessica did a great job to pick Meghan up in the circle and allowed us to get back in the game. Our offense stuck with the process and worked some quality at bats as we came back to tie and take the lead. Overall, it was a quality road trip and we had a lot of experiences we can build on.”
Florida State took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Morgan Klaevemann led off the game with a bunt single. It is the 24th time in her 34 games played that the sophomore has safely reached base as the leadoff hitter in FSU’s first time at the plate.
Ellie Cooper added a bunt single of her own and Alex Powers drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right field. Walks to Jessica Warren and Sydney Broderick, along with a wild pitch, put runners in scoring position. Zoe Casas made it 2-0 with an infield RBI single to the second baseman.
Boston College fought back to take the lead in the bottom of the first, stringing together three consecutive one-out hits, including an RBI double by Tatiana Cortez to cut the lead to 2-1. An RBI sacrifice bunt by Jordan Chimento tied the game and Carly Severini’s RBI single to left gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
After another BC single, the Noles nearly got out of the inning, but an FSU throwing error allowed two more runners to score as Boston College held a 5-2 lead after the first inning.
The Noles got a run back in the third inning on an RBI double by Casas to score Warren who had walked for the second time in the game.
Jessica Burroughs entered the circle for Florida State for the third inning, relieving starter Meghan King. King exited the game after 2.0 innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on five hits with zero walks and one strikeout. Burroughs allowed a walk to start the inning, but retired the next three to end the scoreless inning.
FSU got back in front in the fourth inning, opening the inning with a bunt single by Alex Kossoff. Klaevemann followed with another bunt single and stole second for her second stolen base of the game and 35th of the season. The stolen base was also Florida State’s 100th stolen base of the season.
Powers brought in two runs to tie the game at 5-5, driving a two-RBI single to left. Warren followed with her 10th home run of the season, giving the Noles a 7-5 lead after four innings.
Warren extended the FSU lead to 9-5 with another two-run home run in the top of the sixth, marking her fourth multi-HR game of her career and second of the season.
Burroughs pitched a stellar game in relief, earning the win to move to 20-2 on the season. She allowed only five batters to reach base in 5.0 innings of relief, recording six strikeouts and scattering two hits and three walks, allowing just one run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
The Seminoles are back in action on Wednesday, April 20 with a doubleheader at No. 3 Auburn, starting at 5:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast online on the SEC Network+. Live stats will also be available on Seminoles.com.
